Aashka Desai, M.Sc. (M.Sc. Student)

Aashka is currently working as a master’s student in Biomedical Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Jacqueline Hebert and Dr. Ahmed Shehata. She completed her B.Eng. in Biomedical Engineering where she created a prototype model of a lower limb exoskeleton. Her genuine interest in Rehabilitation Technologies led her to acquire a M.Sc. degree in Rehabilitation Sciences from University of Manitoba. During her M.Sc., she worked with adaptive bikes that improve physical outcome measures of children and adults with neurological disorders. She instrumented the bike and evaluated feasibility of an instrumented adaptive bike to measure physical performance of a rider during dynamic biking.

Aashka joined BLINC Lab in 2024 where she is working towards implementing multi-grasp hand patterns and various occupational tasks into the Virtual Prosthesis EmulatoR (ViPER), an intermediary virtual reality training platform that will train new multi-articulating myoelectric prostheses users before physical prosthetic fit. She is evaluating efficacy and usability of this virtual training platform to train control of advanced myoelectric prostheses.

When not in the lab, Aashka likes to hike, play badminton and visit local coffee shops around the city.
